From 25 years in the clinic to the app I wish I'd had

I'm Berit Nordstrand. I'm a physician, a specialist in clinical pharmacology and in addiction medicine, and a trained cognitive therapist. These days I work on one question: how the food we eat affects the gut, and how the gut affects the rest of us.

About Berit

From the prescription pad to the kitchen

I trained as a physician and spent 25 years in clinical practice. I'm a specialist in clinical pharmacology, which is the study of how medicines actually behave in the body, and a specialist in addiction medicine. I'm also a trained cognitive therapist.

After years of seeing patients, I kept arriving at the same question: what happens to people between appointments? What decides how someone feels rarely happens in a consulting room. It happens in the kitchen, in the supermarket, on a busy Tuesday.

So I resigned my clinical post. Today I work full time on gut health, writing and teaching, and on turning research into something a person can actually do something with.

Knowledge you can't use on an ordinary Wednesday isn't much help.

The story behind GutWise

Why I built GutWise

In a consultation you have fifteen minutes. That's enough to ask a good question. It isn't enough to change a week.

What I kept missing was something that stayed with people afterward. Not another diet, not a list of things you're no longer allowed, but a calm structure: one thing at a time, at a pace that holds, with room for life getting in the way.

GutWise is that tool. It's built on the research, on 25 years as a physician, and on every question I've been asked across talks and books.

I developed the program myself, step by step, with a small team. It's my method, in a form you can carry in your pocket.

Twelve steps, one at a time

I built the program as twelve steps. You take them in order, at your own pace, and nothing opens before you’re ready for it.

  1. 01

    Cut sugar

  2. 02

    Cut out modern wheat

  3. 03

    Eat something fermented

  4. 04

    Eat enough fiber

  5. 05

    Choose cultured dairy products

  6. 06

    Use bone broth

  7. 07

    Eat less meat

  8. 08

    Eat food from the sea

  9. 09

    Use good fats

  10. 10

    Use more spices

  11. 11

    Establish good eating habits

  12. 12

    Stay the course going forward

Not one of them asks you to start over.
